Smothered in Blue

My suffocation happened gradually.

Rather than a blanket blocking the air from my lungs, it had always wrapped itself around my shoulders, a presence that I was able to shift when society dictated. A filmy shawl of aquamarine with just a hint of dark blue shot through to remind me that my façade was endurable, even temporary.

The dark blue threads began to grow wider over time, as if breathing, taking over more and more of the garment of my soul. It became harder to disguise this transformation from light to dark, the shawl transforming into the heaviness of a wool blanket. One that weighed on me for hours, days longer each time it fell across my back.

Until I was lost, gasping for air, smothered in blue.
